Valuation: $25B
Date: August 2021
Investors: Sequoia, SoftBank, Tiger Global
Sector: Fintech

I need someone to explain the math on Chime raising $750M at $25B because I've tried three times and it doesn't work. Sequoia, SoftBank, Tiger Global are funding what they're calling neobank's long hangover, which sounds innovative until you realize it's been tried approximately seventeen times before with identical results: failure. The Series H pricing assumes growth rates that would require the company to violate several laws of physics. The fintech market has room for maybe two winners, and Chime is currently positioned to be the fourth or fifth loser. Someone should check if the investors' calculators are broken.

VERDICT: Neobank's Long Hangover valued at $25B—either visionary timing or expensive optimism.
